Growing old gracefully - what exactly does that mean?
What do we think of when we hear that phrase? Images of Helen Mirren and Dame Judy Dench immediately spring to mind. Happy, smiling, content mature ladies who’s inner beauty shines through and dazzles us to the extent that we would never notice their ever so slightly saggy jawlines. It’s a lovely image, but in reality I don’t ever think I will ever be able to count myself in the ranks of such natural lovelies. So what does it really mean for mere mortals like me? Gracefully-adverb ‘in a respectful and dignified way’. I love that definition. I think I can manage respectful and dignified. The bottom line, I think, is simple. We can approach ageing in whatever way we want. From the Teresa Mays amongst us to the Madonnas strutting their pert, mature behinds. Just as long as we are conducting ourselves in a respectful and dignified way, then we are growing old gracefully. Hooray!
